Comfort Zone Family Retreat - Camp Lakeside-Scott City, KS
St. Catherine Hospice is sponsoring the 11th annual Comfort Zone Family Retreat at Camp Lakeside in Scott City, Kansas. The camp is offered to help the families of Southwest Kansas who are dealing with grief. The Comfort Zone Family Retreat weekend is October 15-17, 2010 at Camp Lakeside in Scott City, Kansas. Cost for the weekend which includes 6 meals and two nights lodging is $10 per family member. Financial aid is available to assist families who would not otherwise be able to attend. The number of participants is limited so families are urged to register now. Marriage for Keeps (FREE CLASSES)
Do you and your spouse need a getaway? Here is your opportunity to "getaway" and enhance your marriage! This 10-week workshop, once a week, teaches a variety of tools to help improve communication skills, conflict-resolution skills and more. Offers a marital assessment; with additional individual feedback meetings. Provides couples quality time together to learn great ways to strengthen their marriage. Includes an evening meal starting at 5:30 p.m. and a total of $50 in gift cards. All of this is available at NO COST to attendees.

Mission: Seeds of Hope reflects God's love by helping inmates and ex-inmates grow in character, intellectually, and spiritually so that they can successfully transition out of the corrections system and become valuable, productive members of their communities.
Upcoming Events:
We enjoy weekly fellowship and a formal meeting from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. During the meetings, volunteers and ex-inmates share information about our work, our needs, and future plans. We also discuss inspirational materials and new ideas for the ministry. Although our roots are Christian, this is a non-denominational organization. FREE LifeSkills Drug & Violence Prevention Training
The Southwest Kansas Regional Prevention Center offers FREE presenter trainings for the top evidence-based drug and violence prevention program in the country for children in grades three through ten. This training is valued at $195 on the LifeSkills Training website. The Regional Prevention Center is offering this training at NO CHARGE because we believe it can make a significant positive difference in the lives of children. Attendees can get 1/2 hour of college credit from Friends University for a fee of $40. Training materials and a certificate of attendance for seven hours are provided at no charge. Becky Upshaw with the Southwest Kansas Regional Prevention Center is hosting a LifeSkills Training Facilitator Workship in the Endowment Room, which is located in the east end of the Garden City Community College Student Center near the cafeteria. FREE Parenting Classes
An Incredible Years Parent Workshop to be facilitated in Spanish is starting August 20 at the Head Start Center, 2620 N. 8th Street, Garden City, KS. This is a new evidence based program funded through the LAUNCH project to build the strengths of families and insure children thrive and develop into productive adults. Parents will learn about the power of playing with their children, encouraging good behavior with praise and rewards, setting effective limits for kids, handling misbehavior in ways that are helpful to both them and their child, and teaching kids to make good decisions.
An English class will start in September and that information will be shared when details are finalized.

FREE PARENTING CLASS for new parents and teen parents with children birth to 4 years old. This 6 week parenting class will teach how to care for a new baby, ages and stages of development, how to protect and teach your child. This class will also teach how to use non-violent discipline, choices and consequences, the power of encouragement, bonding, rules.
This FREE parenting class is sponsored by The Center for Children and Families and CASA Spirit of the Plains.

St. Catherine Hospice Offers Grief Recovery Workshops and Support Group
Grief Awareness Workshops led by Dr. Billy Kryger, Hospice Chaplain: Topics include--types of loss and the stages of grief, doing grief work, dealing with anger, guilt and depression, children and grief, suicide, spiritual issues in grief, holidays and anniversaries, steps to recovery and growth. Grief Awareness Workshops led by Dr. Kenne Whitson, Hospice Chaplain: Topics include--what is normal grief, myths and cliches of grief, holidays and other special occasions, six needs of mourning and helping ourselves heal.

Resource Family Support Groups
The Kansas Children's Service League is offering support groups designed to help adoptive parents or foster parents who are also adopting. The groups are FREE and will give adoptive parents an opportunity to meet and discuss parenting issues with other adoptive parents as well as parent leadership opportunities.
